The 2026 World Cup uses a new expanded format. 48 teams play in 12 groups of four. The top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advance to a new Round of 32. From there it’s straight knockout — Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final on 19 July.
Argentina are the defending champions led by a 38-year-old Messi on his likely final World Cup. France (Mbappé), Brazil (Vinicius Jr), Spain (Lamine Yamal) and England are the big contenders. Portugal’s Ronaldo makes his final bid. South Korea, the only Asian side in a tough group, will be closely watched by Malaysian fans.
The group stage runs 11 June to 27 June 2026. The new Round of 32 follows from 28 June to 3 July, then Round of 16 (4–7 July), Quarterfinals (9–11 July), Semifinals (14–15 July), and the Grand Final on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium — 5:00 AM MYT on 20 July.
