Short answer: yes, you can, and on the right flight, your phone works almost exactly like it does on the ground. WhatsApp, calls, email, light browsing — all of it, at 35,000 feet. What most Malaysians don't realise is that this isn't "aeroplane Wi-Fi" you pay separately for. It's mobile roaming, built into your phone plan, running through the same satellite network your operator already works with.
This guide explains how in-flight mobile roaming actually works, which airlines and routes support it, what you can and can't do mid-air, and — crucially — how to get FREE in-flight roaming if you're a CelcomDigi subscriber.
Yes — on flights equipped with the AeroMobile in-flight mobile network, you can use your phone for data, calls, and SMS at cruising altitude. Your phone connects to a satellite-linked network installed on the aircraft, just like roaming in a foreign country. You do not need aeroplane mode ON — in fact, you need it OFF. The catch: not every flight or aircraft has the system installed.
The confusion around this comes from two different things that both get called "using your phone on a plane" — and they work completely differently.
The first is aeroplane Wi-Fi — the internet access you buy separately through the airline, connect to like a hotspot, and use through your phone's Wi-Fi. That's a separate product, varies by airline, and doesn't use your mobile number or plan at all.
The second is in-flight mobile roaming — and that's what this article is about. It's your actual SIM card, your actual mobile number, connecting to a satellite-powered network installed on the aircraft. WhatsApp messages come in to your number. Missed call notifications ping. Someone can call you on your regular Malaysian number, and you pick up from 35,000 feet. That's roaming — not Wi-Fi — and it works through your mobile operator.
| Aeroplane Wi-Fi | In-flight mobile roaming | |
|---|---|---|
| How you connect | Phone's Wi-Fi to airline hotspot | Your SIM card to AeroMobile network |
| Uses your phone number? | No — new IP only | Yes — your Malaysian number works |
| Paid via | Airline (separate fee) | Your mobile operator (CelcomDigi) |
| Aeroplane mode | ON — then enable Wi-Fi only | OFF — phone connects automatically |
| CelcomDigi cost | Paid to airline — not via your plan | Free with any CelcomDigi roaming pass |
| Can receive calls? | No | Yes |
In-flight mobile roaming uses a small cellular base station (called a picocell) installed inside the aircraft, which connects to a satellite link operated by AeroMobile. That satellite link routes your mobile signal to a ground station, which connects back into the regular mobile network. Your phone behaves exactly as it does when roaming in a foreign country — because technically, that's what's happening.
Here's the step-by-step of what actually happens when you connect mid-air:
The picocell onboard is the key piece of hardware. It's a miniature, low-power base station — basically a tiny mobile tower inside the plane that operates at much lower power than a regular ground tower, which is what makes it safe to use without interfering with the aircraft's navigation systems. The aircraft's metal body also acts as a natural shield, containing the signal inside the cabin.
AeroMobile activates at 6,000 metres (roughly 20,000 feet) altitude — well into the cruise phase. You won't have a signal during taxiing, takeoff, or landing. That's normal and expected.
AeroMobile's in-flight network is available on 25 airlines worldwide, including Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, EVA Air, TAP Air Portugal, EgyptAir, and Uzbekistan Airways. Availability depends on the specific aircraft — not all planes in a carrier's fleet are equipped. Check with your airline before flying.
For Malaysians, the good news is that Malaysia Airlines is one of AeroMobile's partner carriers — specifically on A350 aircraft operated on select routes including London Heathrow, Tokyo Narita, and Hong Kong. If you're flying MAS on one of those long-haul routes, there's a solid chance your aircraft has AeroMobile installed.
The broader list of AeroMobile-equipped airlines spans many of the carriers Malaysians commonly use for long-haul travel to Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. The easiest way to check: visit AeroMobile and look up your carrier. Note that even on a supported airline, older aircraft in the fleet may not have the system — it's always worth checking for your specific flight.
In-flight mobile roaming supports data, calls, and SMS. WhatsApp messaging, emails, light web browsing, and voice calls all work well. Heavy video streaming and large downloads are slow due to satellite latency — speeds are roughly 3G-equivalent. It works best as a "stay-on-top-of-things" tool rather than a replacement for your ground connection.
The thing to understand is that satellite connections have inherent latency — the signal has to travel tens of thousands of kilometres to a geostationary satellite and back. That round trip adds delay. For messaging and email, you don't really notice it. For real-time video calls or gaming, you will.

Buy your roaming pass before boarding — not at the airport. Turn off background sync and auto-updates before the flight. Use messaging over voice calls for better reliability. If you fly regularly, the Monthly Roaming Pass eliminates the need to think about this before every trip.
Yes — on flights equipped with the AeroMobile in-flight mobile network, you can use your phone at cruising altitude for data, calls, and SMS. Malaysia Airlines is one of AeroMobile's partner airlines, and CelcomDigi subscribers with an active roaming pass are covered automatically. The service activates above 6,000 metres, so there's no signal during takeoff, taxi, or landing.
Yes. WhatsApp messages, voice notes, and calls all work during in-flight roaming on AeroMobile-equipped aircraft. Messaging is generally smooth and reliable.
Yes — aeroplane mode must be OFF for in-flight mobile roaming to work. Aeroplane mode disables your SIM's cellular connection, which blocks the AeroMobile network from connecting to your phone.
AirAsia is not currently listed among AeroMobile's partner airlines. Always verify at aeromobile.net/airlines for the latest list of participating carriers.
Check aeromobile.net/airlines for your carrier and aircraft type. Onboard, the cabin crew will make an announcement when the service is active.
Using your phone on a plane is no longer a special perk for first class — it's available to any Malaysian traveller on an AeroMobile-equipped flight, using nothing more than their regular SIM and an active roaming pass. The whole setup takes two minutes in the CelcomDigi app, and once you've done it, it just works
